Abstract for 10 page paper

Abstract:
Exploration of the work of Sensorband, viewed through the light of the pioneering work of John Cage.
The work of Sensorband is very contemporary, and builds on the groundbreaking work of John Cage, in its embrace of chance sonic happenings. Where Cage was more one to embrace familiar sounds, such as the natural sounds of a city street or “constructed” sounds drawn from a series of objects in a studio, Sensorband plays instruments that are designed to incorporate a degree of unexpected sound in their use.
My paper will explore the work of Sensorband, and attempt to define how they are influenced by Cage’s work, by analyzing their methods of composition, and their use of improvisation and experimentation.

A Fair(y) Use Tale

Really interesting, informative, and clever video on copyright law and fair use. This was recommended to me by a friend who happens to be an attorney, and interestingly, a film critic.

Teaching in New Media

Course Introduction

There are many ways to reform art education through technology. In this course we will look at interactive media primarily though project-based inquiry. Students will evaluate the role of computers and technology for existing art curriculum and develop projects that support the physical classroom experience.

Both interactive screen-based and robotic sculpture assignments will be employed. This course will focus on the conceptual educational applications of time-based, interactive media as a creative tool for the classroom. Readings and discussions about the role of new media in art and art education will support project work.

Course Aims

  1. Opportunities for teachers to learn new art methods for the classroom and embed computer assisted learning into the curriculum.
  2. Experience with multimedia and robotics for classroom and museum education.
  3. Introductory evaluation of interactive design for learning situations.

Coursepages for Teaching in New Media are at the MassartOnline Moodle.

Portfolios

Create rich portfolios for your site using the NextGen Gallery plug-in. Open the Gallery Manager  in your Dashboard (the back end, where you do all your writing and customizing) to create gallery names and upload  images (it likes zip files, if you have a lot). Then, link the galleries to your pages and posts.

You can also choose Upload/Insert and upload and attach images right into your posts.

Prepare batches of Web-ready images for your online work. I export directly from iPhoto in batches sized apx 1000 pixels wide and 72dpi. That way they are always large enough but I don’t waste time and server space uploading high-rez images.

~admin – write over these notes with your own copy, or delete them. The NextGen Gallery is already installed. There are other media plug-ins you can activate in the Dashboard to further customize your site.
