TOMAS SARACENO
Tomas Saraceno
B 1973 Argentina
Currently based in Germany
Inspired by migration of spiders-they propel themselves over turbulence to cross oceans in some cases called ballooning- he started making giant interpretations of spider webs and incorporating them with utopian habitats (Air Port City-floating international city in the sky so it’s migratory, it’s crosses boundaries , move like clouds– there are no politics no wars it’s floating above everything). He has an architect and scientific back ground. When creating his sculptures he takes models from UK scientists and even spent a year working with NASA project Mars. He receives grants every year and uses a team of 30 + people to complete his projects. Its interesting how he installs his work, people literally walk through it, in it, not just around it. Their presence is a part of the work so viewing the work is like a relational aesthetics and the fact that so many people are a part of creating the work. My primary interest is in that it deals with the sky which is a spiritual realm, a breath taking realm and my personal place of solace being a skydiver and a photographer.
