“Hardship kin to winter’s sly
Subtraction: milkweed grey and dry;
Entire haying fields erased,
Then loved in absence, then replaced”
Daniel Waters ~ poet laureate of West Tisbury
I made a fleet of boats in response to my homesickness for Martha’s Vineyard.
I thought if I made magical vessels I could at least arrive there spiritually, if not physically.
One is made of driftwood, bones and shells collected on Crane’s and Pavilion beaches in Ipswich, one is made of fibrous paper and golden wire, and one is made of corduroy and beans. I used hot glue, embroidery thread, wire and determination to hold them together.
“We are Tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came.”
