Born in London into a family of Bangladeshi origin in 1974, he began dancing at seven. He studied with the renowned Kathak dancer and teacher Sri Pratap Pawar (akramkhancompany.net)
He studied “kathak, the classical Indian form that Khan trained in from the age of seven. It’s a form that goes back to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, and one which uses stylised gestures to tell mythological tales.” Interview in The Independent
He graduated from the Northern School of Contemporary Dance in Leeds in 1998, where he received the highest mark ever for a Performing Arts degree.
In August 2000 at the age of 25, he launched his own company : Akram Khan Company
