Portfolios
Create rich portfolios for your site using the NextGen Gallery plug-in. Open the Gallery Manager in your Dashboard (the back end, where you do all your writing and customizing) to create gallery names and upload images (it likes zip files, if you have a lot). Then, link the galleries to your pages and posts.
You can also choose Upload/Insert and upload and attach images right into your posts.
Prepare batches of Web-ready images for your online work. I export directly from iPhoto in batches sized apx 1000 pixels wide and 72dpi. That way they are always large enough but I don’t waste time and server space uploading high-rez images.
~admin – write over these notes with your own copy, or delete them. The NextGen Gallery is already installed. There are other media plug-ins you can activate in the Dashboard to further customize your site.

Using WordPress to create your website
Massartonline.org/people runs on the blogging platform WordPress, powerful website and blog software that makes it easy to create a rich media interactive website. Use this for your graduate work here at MassArt. Add your coursework, writing, e-Portfolios presentations and collaborative projects here, at your site, and in the private Art Education Graduate group.
There are two kinds of content that can be added to the site
- Pages: content that does not flow with the chronological posts – Introduction and Artist Statement, for example
- Posts: content that flows chronologically (like a traditional blog) and that can be categorized and tagged.
Categories help your content organized.
Comments encourage feedback and discussion. There are spam-catching features in place, however, read about the various options for comments, especially if you are planning on opening your comments up to the public.
Privacy. Your blogs are currently set so that search engines do not crawl them, making them less likely to attract spam. They can be private, so that only logged-in members can see them. Individual posts can be password protected, also, when necessary. There are other levels of privacy available under the “privacy” menu.
You can export the content of this blog and import it into another WordPress site (or some of the other blogging platforms). You can import content, also. You may also create other blogs here, for other projects.
Happy Blogging!
